Description

A young woman sits absorbed in a book or letter held open across her lap, her eyes lowered in concentration and her lips slightly parted. She wears a wide straw hat piled with pink, coral, and cream roses, and a loose, sheer dress that slips off one shoulder in soft folds of white and pale rose.

Renoir dissolves the background into a warm tangle of olive, gold, and moss green brushstrokes, so that the woman’s flower-laden hat and bare shoulder seem to glow against it. The paint on her sleeve and bodice is built from quick, overlapping strokes of peach and cream, giving the whole figure a relaxed, sun-warmed softness typical of his late work.
