Description

A young woman in a long white dress and straw hat trimmed with blue leans one hand on a low stone wall and the other on the top rail of a dark iron garden gate. She looks out calmly toward the viewer, her posture relaxed, with a wicker basket of vegetables set on the path at her feet.

Behind her, the garden dissolves into a shimmering mass of foliage rendered in dabbed strokes of yellow-green, teal, and violet shadow, with a dark, sculptural tree arching over the gate at the right edge of the canvas. Renoir plays the crisp black bars of the gate and the woman’s carefully painted straw hat against this loose, almost vibrating greenery, and warms the whole scene with the ochre path underfoot.
