Description

Jeune femme au chapeau de paille, robe blanche shows a young woman in profile, seen from the shoulders up against a soft teal-green background. She wears a wide straw hat trimmed with pale ribbon and a cluster of light feathers or flowers at the crown, and beneath it a loose white blouse with a collar and long sleeves gathered at the shoulder. Her auburn hair is pulled back, and her cheeks are touched with a warm pink blush.

Renoir paints the white blouse in long, sweeping strokes of cream, pale grey, and soft yellow, letting the fabric dissolve into loose ribbons of colour rather than sharp folds. The straw hat is built the same way, with quick touches of white and gold, while the face is more carefully modelled, giving a soft focal point against the hazy, almost abstract handling of the clothing and background.
