Description
A young bather stands knee-deep in shimmering water, her body turned three-quarters to the viewer as she looks down and to the side. One arm crosses her chest while the other hangs loosely at her hip, giving her pose a natural, unposed quality. Her auburn hair is gathered simply at the back of her neck, leaving her face and shoulders bare to the light.
Renoir renders her skin in soft, pearly pinks and creams, the brushwork smooth and rounded to emphasize the fullness of her form, while the water around her is built from short, broken strokes of blue, gold, and brown that catch and scatter the light like real ripples. The warm, dappled background suggests a riverbank dissolving into reflection rather than any fixed setting.
Held at the Pola Museum of Art, this 1888 bather subject, one of Renoir’s favorite themes, is available as a wall art reproduction. Young Woman Bathing can be printed on museum-quality canvas in a range of sizes, made to order and shipped worldwide.
