Description
A small, quickly painted sketch shows a woman in a wide straw hat and a bright orange-red top bending forward at the waist, her blue-striped skirt trailing behind her, as she reaches down among flowering shrubs. Banks of green and gold foliage rise on either side of the pale, sunlit path where she stands.
The paint is applied in short, loaded strokes with little blending, the warm orange of her top standing out sharply against the cool greens of the garden. It has the spontaneous, unfinished quality of a study made quickly outdoors.
Held today at the Barnes Foundation, this painting is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in sizes that keep the original’s proportions, close to a 16.4 x 22.4 cm ratio, so the composition reads as Renoir intended.
