Description
Painted in 1875, The Tuileries Garden looks down over a Parisian park from a raised vantage point, with winding paths, clipped lawns and a screen of trees opening onto rooftops, a dome and church spires in the hazy distance. Small strolling figures are dabbed in as soft touches of white and dark paint scattered across the paths and grass.
Renoir builds the whole scene from a warm, sun-bleached palette of beige, ochre and soft green, with the foreground tree catching a few strokes of autumn orange. The atmosphere is loose and hazy throughout, more a impression of light over the park than a detailed record of it.
