Description
Painted in 1874 and shown at the first Impressionist exhibition, this full-length portrait shows a young ballet dancer standing in a pale blue tutu cinched with a darker blue sash, her ballet slippers crossed at the ankle. She wears a black ribbon at her throat and a blue bow in her long, loose auburn hair, one hand holding a pair of gloves. Renoir dissolves the studio setting into soft strokes of green and blue-grey, letting the girl’s pale dress and direct gaze hold the composition. The painting is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
As a museum-quality reproduction made to order on canvas or fine-art paper, its soft blues and life-size scale make it a graceful choice for a bedroom, nursery, or dance studio.
