Description
A small dark rowboat drifts on a patch of blue water almost swallowed by overhanging foliage, a single figure in a white dress and pale hat seated near its bow. Thick curtains of leaves in green, gold and rust hang down from unseen branches above, framing the boat so tightly that only a sliver of open water and one bare, curving branch cut across the scene remain visible.
Renoir builds the whole canvas from dense, overlapping strokes of foliage color, greens shot through with yellow and orange, so that the leafy screen becomes as much the subject as the boat itself. The white-clad figure, painted more simply than her surroundings, glows quietly against the shadowed water, a small human note in an otherwise entirely vegetal, light-filled world.
This secluded river scene, rich with greens and dappled light, makes a striking piece of wall art: a made-to-order canvas print offered in a range of sizes up to large formats and shipped worldwide.
