Description
Thick, textured strokes of blue and grey build a river scene where a white-sailed boat cuts through the water beside a cluster of moored rowboats rendered in quick dabs of ochre and gold. Behind them, a dense bank of trees rises in a patchwork of green, rust, and yellow, their reflections breaking apart in the rippling current below. The paint is applied with unusual thickness for a river subject, giving the whole scene a raised, almost sculpted surface under a pale grey-blue sky.
Painted in 1890 and held at the National Gallery of Art, this small, vividly worked canvas turns an everyday boating spot into a study of color and paint texture.
This reproduction of The Blue River is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in the size of your choice and delivered ready to hang.
