Description
A standing bather bends slightly forward, seen from behind, gathering a pale pink and white cloth at her hip. Renoir paints the entire scene, figure included, in cool blues shot through with green and gold, so the body barely separates in colour from the flowering foliage that fills the rest of the canvas.
Dated 1887, this standing bather is unusual for how far Renoir pushes the blue tonality even into the flesh itself. The print keeps that cool, unified palette intact rather than warming the skin back toward a more conventional pink, since the blue is the whole point of the picture.
