Description
A pale, sun-bleached ravine cuts through the canvas, its chalky white rock faces rising on both sides and framing a narrow gap of clear blue sky. A dusty path winds up through the gully, flanked by scrubby olive trees and low green bushes rendered in short, energetic strokes of green, yellow-ochre and blue-grey.
Renoir builds the whole scene from vigorous, broken brushwork, letting the white of the rock show through thin passages of paint and letting sunlight seem to flicker unevenly across the uneven terrain. The composition has no figures at all; the drama comes entirely from the interplay of jagged rock, scattered vegetation and open sky.
This vivid Provencal landscape, painted with the loose energy of Renoir’s outdoor studies, is available as a made-to-order canvas print in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide for anyone who wants a sunlit corner of the south of France on their wall.
