Description
A shaded river opens between two tall stands of trees, their green and blue-green foliage arching in from both sides of the sheet. Renoir set his easel low, close to the water, so the eye slips down a narrow corridor of reeds and grasses to the pale, hazy hills beyond.
The scene is built from loose, translucent washes rather than solid paint: strokes of blue, violet and moss green overlap and bleed into one another, letting the paper itself supply the light. Reddish accents in the reeds and a scatter of warm ochre keep the cool palette from turning flat.
This River Landscape is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee print on canvas, reproducing the composition held at the Albertina. It is a reproduction made for display, not the original work.
