Description

A woman and a small girl walk hand in hand along a woodland path, the woman turning her head slightly to glance back over her shoulder while the child looks up toward her. The woman wears a wide straw hat trimmed with pink roses, a pale blue blouse with full sleeves gathered at the wrist, and a long white skirt gathered up in one hand as she walks; a pink rose is pinned at her chest.

The little girl beside her wears a soft coral dress and a large white bonnet, one hand tucked into the woman’s, the other holding a small sprig of flowers. Renoir sets the pair against a dense screen of trees and dappled undergrowth, built from short, vibrating strokes of green, gold and ochre that let dappled light seem to move across the whole canvas.
