Description
Rather than a single portrait, this canvas gathers six studies of a young girl’s head and shoulders, each caught at a slightly different angle and moment: eyes lowered, chin tucked, head turned in profile. One study, seated at the right in a pale blue dress, wears a delicate necklace and looks out more directly than the rest.
The heads are painted in warm, loose strokes of auburn and honey-brown hair against a mottled olive-grey ground, the white and pale blue dresses barely more than a few confident sweeps of the brush. It reads as a working sheet, Renoir circling the same young sitter to find her likeness rather than settling on one final pose.
This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, a reproduction of Renoir’s original study sheet rather than the original work.
