Description

Renoir paints a garden path near L’Estaque as it opens onto the Mediterranean. A low stone wall runs along the left, and a small figure in a white dress walks the sunlit track toward a gap in the pines, where a strip of blue bay and pale hills appears in the distance. Overhead, wind-bent pine branches and dense shrubs frame the view in warm reds, oranges and golden greens.

The brushwork is loose and flickering, laying warm sunlit foliage against the cool blue-violet of the water and sky, so the whole scene seems to vibrate with midday light filtering through leaves.
