Description
Houses in a Park shows a cluster of small buildings nestled among dense trees and shrubs on a hillside. A pale house with a red tiled roof stands at the centre, and just in front of it sits a smaller pink cottage with a dark blue pointed roof and turquoise-shuttered windows. A row of slender, rounded trees lines a bank at the left, while thick green and gold foliage fills most of the canvas, with a soft grey-mauve sky above.
Renoir works the whole scene in loose, blended strokes, letting the greens, ochres, and warm pinks of the rooftops merge softly into one another. The brushwork is hazy and atmospheric throughout, with the architecture only loosely defined among the surrounding greenery, so the overall impression is one of a quiet, overgrown park rather than a precise view.
Painted in 1911 and held at the Barnes Foundation, the original canvas measures 22.2 by 37.2 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes.
