Description
A young girl’s face looks out from beneath an enormous flowered bonnet, painted in loose, translucent washes of blue, green, and violet that spill across her hair and shoulders. Her features, dark eyes, a small mouth, and reddish hair, are drawn with more precision than the surrounding wash, giving the sense of a quick, direct study made outdoors. Behind her stretches a coastal landscape: pale sandy ground, choppy dark blue water, and hazy cliffs fading into an overcast sky, suggesting a seaside setting glimpsed over her shoulder.
Dated to around 1884, this watercolor study shows Renoir working quickly and loosely, letting the girl’s bonnet and the sea behind her dissolve into related tones of blue and green.
