Description
Grand Canal, Venice is a bright, busy view down the canal, with tall pastel-coloured buildings lining both banks under a wide blue sky streaked with clouds. In the foreground a gondolier poles his boat past a striped mooring pole, while further down the canal more gondolas, sailboats, and moored vessels crowd the water beneath a distant bell tower.
Renoir covers the water’s surface with short, broken dashes of blue, gold, and white that read as sunlight scattering across ripples, a technique that gives the whole canal a shimmering, restless energy typical of his Venice paintings.
Painted in 1881 and held at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the original canvas measures 54 by 65.1 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
