Description
Geneviève Bernheim de Villers is a portrait of a young girl with long, wavy auburn hair, a small ornament pinned above her forehead. She wears a striped blue-and-white dress and a thick amber necklace, and sits at a table where small covered porcelain dishes and saucers, painted with blue floral patterns, are set out in front of her. Her hands rest among the dishes as if she has just been playing with them.
The whole canvas is built around warm golden and amber tones, from the girl’s hair and necklace to the honey-coloured background and tabletop, with the pale blue stripes of her dress providing the main contrast. Renoir’s brushwork is loose and warm throughout, softest in the face and more textured in the hair and sleeves.
Painted in 1910 and held at the Musée d’Orsay, the canvas measures 53 by 44 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes.
