Painted in 1895, this tender domestic scene shows Gabrielle Renard leaning close over young Jean Renoir as the two play with small toy figures set out on a tabletop. She smiles down at him with open affection while he reaches out with a curious hand, his red-gold curls bright against her dark hair.

Behind them a wallpaper patterned in loose red and green florals fills the background, painted with the same soft, feathery touch given to the boy’s white smock and Gabrielle’s navy dress, so the whole scene feels wrapped in warmth.
