Description
Renoir looks across rising ground at the edge of a Breton wood. The foreground is a bank of dark green and olive scrub. Beyond it a yellow green meadow carries scattered small trees, several with slender reddish trunks, and a low band of purple grey stone or wall crosses the lower right.
The slopes behind climb through green, gold and russet, and a single mark of pink and red at the centre right reads as a roof among the leaves. A strip of blue grey distant hills and a pale sky close the top edge.
There is no path into this picture and no figure in it. Renoir builds the whole thing from short touches of green laid at different temperatures, and the differences between those greens are what give it depth.
