She wears bright orange gloves and a red hat trimmed with a wide, flame-colored ribbon, while her partner, seen mostly from behind in a dark navy suit, cools himself with a folded fan held above their heads. A straw hat lies discarded on the ground, and a table set with a carafe and glass waits under the trees behind them.
Painted in 1883 and now at the Musée d’Orsay, the tall, narrow canvas is dominated by the floral pattern of the woman’s dress and her vivid orange gloves and hat, set against the man’s dark blue suit and a backdrop of deep green foliage.
