Description
Two figures sit in a yellow rowboat on a river of shifting green and blue reflections: a man in dark clothing at the near end, and a woman in dark dress with a red flower in her hair seated toward the bow. An oar cuts diagonally across the water, its reflection doubling the boat’s yellow below the surface.
Painted in 1880, the canvas (54 by 73 cm) pairs the fellow Impressionist Claude Monet with the actress known as Madame Henriot, the boat’s bright yellow the single dominant colour against the water’s cooler, more broken reflections. The print keeps that yellow vivid and unbroken, since the whole composition is built around it.
