Description
Trees crowd both sides of a wooded hillside, opening in the centre to reveal a glimpse of blue water and pale stone structures below. Sunlight breaks through the canopy in patches of warm gold and green, and small figures and rockwork are just visible near the water’s edge.
Painted in 1892 near Pont-Aven in Brittany and held by the Barnes Foundation, the canvas (46 by 55.6 cm) uses the framing chestnut trees to give real depth to the glimpsed view below. The print keeps that patch of blue water clear and legible through the surrounding foliage, since it is the picture’s one point of open distance.
