Description

A woman glances back over her shoulder, her face turned three-quarters toward the viewer while her body twists away, wrapped in a blue coat with a high collar. Her hat is the most worked part of the canvas, a dark blue felt shape topped with a spray of loose, wind-blown feathers rendered in thick, dragging strokes of blue, white and grey. Beneath the brim her expression is quiet and a little wary, painted with soft pink in the cheeks and a touch of red at the lips, brown-blonde hair just visible at the temple.

What is most striking here is how much is left undone. The tan ground of the canvas shows through almost everywhere below the shoulders, with only a few loose strokes of blue suggesting where the coat continues, and the background is bare beige linen with a scattering of unrelated pencil and paint marks near the edges. This is a study, not a finished picture, and it shows Renoir’s working method directly: build the head and hat with full attention, leave everything else as shorthand.

Painted in the mid 1870s, close to the height of his Impressionist period, the picture shows the rapid, confident handling he brought to portrait sketches of this decade, thick loaded strokes for the feathers, thin scrubbed color for the coat, almost nothing for the ground. Its unfinished state is part of its appeal, letting the viewer watch the painting arrive.

On a wall it functions almost like a fragment of drawing brought to life in color, pale and airy where the canvas breathes through, dense and blue where the hat and collar sit. Its restraint and the warm neutral field around the figure make it easy to place near other, busier pictures without competing.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes is this study available in?

It is offered in a range of sizes; because the original is a small sketch (20 by 15 cm), enlarging it keeps the rapid brushwork clearly visible.

What print medium is used?

It is a giclée print on canvas or fine-art paper, with inks calibrated to keep the plain cream background clean behind the blue hat and coat.

How is the print delivered?

Painting time for the hand-painted oil: 2 to 4 weeks. Archival canvas print: 2 to 4 business days. Delivery once shipped: 5 to 7 business days, free and tracked worldwide by express courier (UPS or DHL). It ships rolled in a protective tube, or stretched and ready to hang if you choose that option.
