Description

A crowded beach spreads beneath a wooded headland touched with autumn red and gold, dozens of small figures under parasols scattered across the warm sand. A single white sail crosses the calm water at the left, and a red parasol stands out sharply among the pale crowd.

Painted at the seaside resort of Pornic in Brittany, the picture is built almost entirely in warm ochre and gold, the headland’s autumn colour and the sunlit sand sharing nearly the same rich palette.
