Description
Painted in 1870, this life-size bather stands at the edge of a dark, wooded pool, holding a white cloth trimmed with a red bow as she pauses before drying herself. At her feet a small griffon dog sits alert on a heap of white drapery, and a second woman half-hidden among the leaves rests her chin on her hand, watching.
Renoir sets the pale, softly lit body against a wall of deep green foliage, with only the red ribbon and a patch of red cloth on the ground breaking the cool, shadowed palette of the woods.
Given the scale of the original, this print works especially well large: we reproduce it as a giclee on canvas or fine-art paper, with the deep greens and the glow of the skin held true, in sizes from modest to near life-size.
