Description
A young child’s head is shown close up in profile, facing left, with soft reddish-gold hair falling across the forehead and pink flushed on the cheek and ear. The brushwork is loose and rapid, especially in the hair, where individual strokes of ochre, copper and cream stand for a full head of curls rather than blending into a smooth mass.
Painted in 1895 and held by the Barnes Foundation, the small canvas (22 by 18 cm) is built from a narrow, warm palette of pinks, creams and golds set against a softly brushed pink and green ground. The print keeps that close, cropped intimacy, holding the warmth of the skin and hair without letting the loose background strokes compete with the face.
