Description
A woman in a pale cream dress stands at the edge of a riverbank beside a moored rowboat, its hull painted in warm russet-red and cream and its two oars crossed and resting inside. Willows lean in from the right in thick, layered greens, and the water carries loose reflections of blue, white and rust from the boat and the far bank.
Renoir painted this quiet river scene around 1885, when he was working closely from motifs along the Seine. The boat’s warm red is the strongest note in the picture, set deliberately against the cooler blues of the water, and the print keeps that contrast sharp so the boat still anchors the eye rather than sinking into the surrounding green.
