Description
Two riders in pale robes sit atop a donkey moving through tall, sunlit reeds, with more mounted figures strung out behind them toward a hazy town on the water’s edge. The sky takes up most of the canvas, painted in soft blue with a low band of warm haze where it meets the sea, and the grasses in the foreground are built from quick, upright strokes of green, gold and rust.
Renoir painted this North African scene in 1881, on a trip that pushed his palette toward brighter light and looser handling. The reeds and figures are barely more than colour notes, dissolved into the glare of the coast, and the print holds onto that haze rather than sharpening it into a crisper, more literal scene.
