Description

Scène antique, femmes aux peplums shows four women draped in flowing classical robes, or peplums, in shades of white, plum and red. The central figure raises both arms above her head to adjust a length of purple cloth, while companions on either side stand or bend close by against a soft, pale lavender ground.

Painted in 1895, the scene belongs to the antique-inspired subjects Renoir returned to in his later years, rendered here in soft, warm color rather than sharp outline.
