Description
Harengs et citron is a small kitchen still life of three herrings laid across a rumpled white cloth, with a single lemon set beside them. The fish are painted with an iridescent sheen of dark blue-green and black along their backs, shading to pale silver on their bellies, their tails and fins picked out in loose, quick strokes.
The white cloth beneath the fish is built up with heavy folds and strong highlights, while a plain dark green-blue background keeps all the attention on the herrings and the single bright note of yellow from the lemon.
Painted in 1890, this still life is reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit a kitchen wall or a small grouping of still lifes.
