Description

Jeune femme et chat shows a young woman with loose auburn hair, seated with her shoulders bare above a white chemise slipping off one shoulder. She turns her head to look toward a tortoiseshell and white cat, which stands upright on its hind legs on a dark green pedestal beside her, reaching upward.

Behind them, a dark wooden cabinet and a spray of pink and white flowers fill the upper part of the canvas, with a white cloth draped over the furniture. Renoir renders the woman’s skin in smooth, warm tones while the cat’s fur and the surrounding foliage are built up with quick, broken brushstrokes.
