Description

A field of ripe wheat fills the lower half of this landscape, its golden stalks bending and catching the light in every direction. A cluster of slender trees rises at the left where the field meets a shaded hollow, and beyond them the land rolls gently away toward low wooded hills under a wide, cloud-scattered sky.

Renoir paints the wheat with quick, upright strokes of yellow, gold and touches of rose and green, giving the whole foreground a sense of movement, as if a breeze were passing through. The middle distance cools into soft greens and blues, and the sky above is built from loose, feathery clouds in white and pale blue, a classic Impressionist study of high summer in the countryside.
