Description

A cluster of white ducks paddles across a shimmering, blue-green pond in the foreground, while a low white fence and footbridge mark the far bank, beyond which a red-roofed house rises among thick autumn trees in gold, russet and green. Small figures stroll along the bridge, and further right a person poles a narrow boat past the reeds.

Renoir loads the canvas with thick, broken strokes, the pond rendered in overlapping dashes of blue, olive and gold that catch the light the same way the foliage does, so water and trees seem to share one continuous, vibrating surface. The red roof provides the one strong, saturated note of color in an otherwise blended, autumnal palette.
