Description
A small boat carrying two figures drifts on a blue river that winds between wooded banks, tall trees rising thick and dark green on the left while lower bushes and reeds line the right shore. In the far distance, small houses and a hint of masts or rooftops sit at the point where the river bends out of sight, under a pale sky streaked with soft pink and cream at the horizon.
Renoir builds the whole scene with thick, energetic strokes of paint, the foliage rendered in dabs of green, gold and dark brown that give the foreground grasses a rough, textured presence. The small scale of the canvas and the loose handling give the picture the feel of a quick, direct study made outdoors.
This landscape is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclée canvas print, both reproductions of the original held at the Princeton Art Museum, not the original painting itself.
