Description
A small child is turned three quarters away, eyes cast down and mouth slightly open. A mass of wavy red gold hair falls to the shoulders with a fringe over the forehead, and Renoir paints it in long curving strokes that catch more light than anything else in the picture.
The cheeks are round and flushed, the eyes blue, the mouth a small red mark. The smock is cream with coral pink stripes and a blue trim at one shoulder, painted so thinly that the canvas shows through it. Behind, a soft grey green ground laid in vertical strokes, with no detail at all.
He signed at the lower left. The recorded title names the sitter as Pierre Renoir, the painter’s eldest son, and dates the canvas 1890.
