Description

This version of La Grenouillere crowds the fashionable bathing spot on the Seine with life. On the left, under the shade of tall trees, women in white and striped dresses stroll with parasols beside two small dogs, while a man in a dark coat and top hat stands among them. To the right, a white-sailed boat glides past a wooden platform where bathers wade and swim in the dappled water.

Renoir’s brush is quick and broken here, dissolving faces and fabric into patches of light and shadow, so the whole riverbank seems to flicker with a warm summer afternoon.
