Description
This is Renoir’s best-known view of La Grenouillere, built around the small round islet nicknamed the flowerpot, reached by a narrow wooden footbridge. Rowboats are moored in the foreground, their hulls reflected in patches of green, gold and blue water, while a crowd of Parisians in dark coats and pale dresses gathers on the bridge and on the floating platform to the right, beneath a screen of tall trees.
Renoir builds the rippling water from short, comma-shaped strokes of green, cream and blue, letting the surface catch light the way the crowd above it catches the eye.
This piece is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in the size you choose, true to the proportions of the original painting.
