Description
Guernesey looks down onto a curving bay from a rise of sandy, rock-strewn ground. Colourful cliffs in rust-red, ochre, and dark green rim the far side of the water, while a band of turquoise sea, whipped into pale foam, separates them from the sandy shore. A few small figures stand in the shallows near the middle of the beach.
Renoir applies the paint in thick, energetic strokes, especially in the rocks at the lower right and the choppy water, giving the whole scene a wind-blown, sunlit immediacy that suits the rugged Channel Islands coastline.
Painted in 1882 and held at the McNay Art Museum, the original panel measures 19.1 by 32.7 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes for a small study nook or a larger coastal display.
