Description
A shallow ceramic bowl, its blue-and-white glaze catching a hint of a painted scene, sits at the centre of a still life surrounded by figs, apples and loose green leaves. A red apple glows at the upper left, and a bundle of pale asparagus stalks lies along the lower right, all resting on a white cloth.
Painted in 1916 and held by the Barnes Foundation, the wide, low canvas (20.3 by 38.1 cm) gathers this modest harvest of fruit and vegetables around the patterned bowl as its centrepiece. The print keeps the bowl’s blue-and-white decoration clear and legible, since it is the one passage of fine detail among the broadly brushed produce.
