Description
A sunlit hillside of wildflowers and long grass tumbles down toward a curving blue bay, where a pale town sits on a spit of land with sailboats scattered across the water. Renoir builds the slope from short, dabbed strokes of gold, green and rust, leaving the sky almost bare and hazy above the coastline in the distance.
Painted in 1881 and now held by the MuMa museum in Le Havre, the canvas (46 by 55.5 cm) belongs to the loose, sun-struck landscapes Renoir made on his travels that year. The print keeps the warm gold of the hillside vivid against the cooler blue of the bay, so the view still reads as looking out from shade into open light.
