Description
A bather sits bent forward on a low bench, blonde-brown hair bound with a white headband, one hand smoothing a white cloth over her raised knee. Behind her a Mediterranean landscape opens out in blue and violet haze, and at the right, small and distant, two more women and a child stand near the shore.
Painted in 1897 and held by the Musée Picasso in Paris, the large canvas (116 by 89 cm) sets its close, warm-toned bather against that cool, faraway view, giving the picture real depth rather than the flattened backgrounds of Renoir’s more close-cropped nudes. The print keeps the distant figures legible in miniature, so that quiet detail is not lost at any size.
