Description
Three figures share a marble-topped café table: a man in a black top hat and coat at the back, and in front of him two women, one wrapped in a russet fur-trimmed coat, the other in blue with a straw hat pinned with dark ribbon. A tall glass and a mug sit on the white tablecloth between them, and the room behind dissolves into a warm, dark red interior with a hint of potted greenery.
Painted in 1877, this café scene belongs to the years when Renoir was working through the crowded, informal groupings that define his Impressionist period, close in spirit to his larger dance-hall and boating pictures. The figures are built loosely, with faces only partly resolved, so the print favours warmth and mood over sharp portrait detail, keeping the deep reds of the room glowing behind the group.
