Description
A single green pear and a rosy red-and-yellow apple sit side by side on a plain white cloth, painted with remarkable economy: just two forms, a stem, and a shadow. The pear’s skin shifts from olive to yellow-green with a jagged reddish stem, while the apple glows in warm orange and crimson tones with a small dark calyx on top.
Renoir divides the background into two flat bands, a rust-red strip along the top and a pale, loosely brushed grey-white cloth below, leaving nothing to distract from the two pieces of fruit. The brushwork is broad and confident, each fruit built from just a handful of overlapping strokes that still manage to suggest real weight and roundness.
This spare, elegant fruit study, Apple and Pear (Pomme et poire), held at the Barnes Foundation, is offered as a made-to-order canvas reproduction in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide.
