Description
Slender tree trunks rise through a dense grove in full autumn colour, their leaves washed in orange, gold and rust against a pale, barely-there sky. Renoir works here in watercolour rather than oil, the paper’s texture visible through thin, layered strokes of colour that leave the grass and foliage looking loose and translucent.
Dated around 1888 to 1890, this autumn grove is a quicker, more transparent record of the scene than a painted canvas would give, the warm colours built up in overlapping washes rather than thick paint. The print keeps that translucency intact, since flattening it into opaque colour would lose exactly what makes the sheet distinctive.
