Description

A towering chalk cliff, streaked with pink, orange and gold, dominates this coastal view, its natural arch visible on the left where the rock has been worn through by the sea. Small fishing boats with dark hulls and bright red and orange sails dot the water in front of it, while a scattering of tiny figures walks along the shore near a cluster of pale buildings tucked at the base of the cliff.

Renoir applies the paint in urgent, hatched strokes throughout, the sky built from streaks of blue and white cloud that echo the choppy rhythm of the sea below. The whole scene reads as a quick, weather-charged impression rather than a calm study, full of movement in both water and sky.
