Description
Girl Darning shows a young woman with dark hair pinned up, bent forward in concentration over needlework held in her hands. She wears a loose orange-red blouse, and a piece of white fabric is draped across her lap, with a dark sock or glove being mended visible under her fingers.
Renoir sets the warm orange of the blouse against a deep red-brown background, painted in broad, streaky vertical strokes that echo the folds of the sleeve. The face and hands are more softly modelled, catching the light, while the whole composition stays close and intimate, focused entirely on the quiet act of sewing.
Painted in 1909 and held at the Barnes Foundation, the canvas measures 38.2 by 28.6 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes.
