Description

The river fills most of this small canvas, a wide plate of grey-blue water that Renoir has left almost still, broken only by a scatter of reflected light where a gap in the clouds lets warm gold and pink through. That patch of sky, thickly loaded with cream and rose paint, is the brightest thing here, and its glow drops straight down into the water below it like a second sun caught on the surface.

Trees crowd both banks in loose, feathery strokes of green, some almost black-green in shadow, others lit up yellow-green where the light catches the top leaves. On the left the foliage is so dense it reads as a solid dark wall, while across the water the trees open just enough to reveal a small red-roofed house tucked among them, no more than a few dabs of brick red and grey.

Renoir keeps the brushwork rough throughout, laying colour down in short overlapping strokes that never smooth into a clean surface. The canvas weave itself shows through in places, especially in the sky, giving the whole scene a slightly grainy, unfinished intimacy, as if painted quickly on the spot rather than composed in a studio. A stretch of river with nobody in it is a rarer sight in his work than the crowded riverside gatherings he is best known for, closer in spirit to the quieter landscapes he painted for himself between commissioned figure work.

Along the bottom edge, tall grass and reeds in yellow-green and rust push up into the water, painted with quick vertical flicks that anchor the eye before it travels back across the river. It is a quiet, unpeopled corner of the countryside, the kind of view that rewards a slow look rather than a dramatic one, and its cool greens and blues would sit calmly on a wall without ever shouting for attention.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes can this small landscape be ordered in?

It is available in a range of sizes; because the original is a compact study (14 by 20 cm), enlarging it keeps the loose brushwork visible rather than diminishing it.

What is the print made of?

It is a giclée print on canvas or fine-art paper, using pigment inks that keep the warm yellow sky glowing against the surrounding green banks.

How is the print delivered?

Painting time for the hand-painted oil: 2 to 4 weeks. Archival canvas print: 2 to 4 business days. Delivery once shipped: 5 to 7 business days, free and tracked worldwide by express courier (UPS or DHL). It ships rolled in a protective tube, or stretched and ready to hang if you choose that option.
