Description

This is Renoir at his loosest: a nude bather turned away from us, her back and shoulder built from broad strokes of peach, rose and ochre that barely resolve into a body before dissolving back into the surrounding colour. The paint is so thin in places that the canvas weave shows through as a fine dotted texture across her skin, giving her an almost powdery, sun-bleached surface.

She holds a pale cloth bunched at her hip, rendered in quick grey-white strokes that trail off into loose vertical lines, more gesture than fabric. Her dark hair is pulled back in a few economical strokes, just enough to suggest the turn of her head as she looks down and away from the viewer.

Around her, the background breaks into patches of teal, sage green and violet-grey, applied with the same short, dabbing strokes used on the figure, so that woman and setting share one restless surface rather than sitting apart as subject and backdrop. A dark knot of green in the lower corner reads as foliage or a basket, left deliberately vague.

The whole panel feels like a study made in a single sitting, quick and searching rather than resolved, and that unfinished quality is exactly what gives it its charm: brushwork you can trace stroke by stroke, and a warm, sunlit body dissolving into cool colour at every edge. Loose sketch panels like this one, worked fast and left without a finished edge, survive in smaller numbers than the resolved bather canvases he carried through to exhibition, which makes a study this immediate a rarer thing to have on a wall than the subject alone would suggest.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes is this sketch available in?

It is offered in a range of sizes; because the original is a very small study, enlarging it keeps the loose, rapid brushwork visible rather than diminishing it.

What is the print made on?

It is a giclée print on canvas or fine-art paper, using pigment inks that preserve the thin, sketch-like quality of the paint rather than sharpening it into a finished look.

How long does delivery take?

Painting time for the hand-painted oil: 2 to 4 weeks. Archival canvas print: 2 to 4 business days. Delivery once shipped: 5 to 7 business days, free and tracked worldwide by express courier (UPS or DHL). It ships rolled in a protective tube, or stretched and ready to hang if you choose that option.
